"the recipe"

okay... after my "let's
fry everything" blog... several of you have asked for
the recipe for Monte Cristos. they're really easy to
make and take very little time. here you go...
this is for making 4 sandwiches:
1 egg
1 1/4 cups plus 2 tablespoons of water
1 1/4 cups flour
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
8 slices of egg bread (challah works well) sliced 1/2 inch thick
4 slices of ham
4 slices of turkey
4 slices of swiss cheese
3 cups canola oil
powdered sugar
blackberry preserves (optional)
ice cold Mountain Dew*
to make the batter:
- whisk the egg and water together in a mixing bowl.
- add the flour, salt and baking powder and whisk thoroughly, scraping the sides of the bowl.
- continue to whisk until smooth (20 minutes recommended)
- on one slice of bread, arrange a slice each of ham, turkey and cheese and put the other slice of bread on top (umm... i think it's called making a sandwich)
- cut the sandwich in half diagonally
- heat the oil in the pan to between 365 and 375 degrees (don't let it get hotter than this)
- dip half of the sandwich in the batter allowing the excess to drain
- place the sandwich half in the oil
- cook for three minutes on each side
- place on a cookie sheet covered in paper towels in a warm oven until ready to serve
- sprinkle sandwiches lightly with powdered sugar (sounds weird, but makes a huge difference!) and serve with blackberry preserves on the side (i think this is gross).
- wash down with ice cold Mountain Dew*

"i can't get to sleep..."
by the way... just wanted to throw this out there....
if you get a chance... check out this song. it's called "Overkill" and it's by a guy named Colin Hay. he was the lead singer for that 80's band, Men at Work and it's actually a remake (much better) of one of their songs. anyway, they used the song in an episode of Scrubs (one of the best shows on TV, by the way) and it's stuck with me ever since. i got it off of iTunes. it's just an acoustic guitar song, but it's one of those songs that i think pretty much everyone can relate to at one point or another. check it out if you want.
i can't get to sleep...
i think about the implications
of diving in too deep...
and possibly the complications.
especially at night...
i worry over situations
i know will be alright...
perhaps it's just imagination.
day after day it reappears
night after night my heartbeat shows the fears
ghost appear and fade away
alone between the sheets...
it only brings exasperation.
it's time to walk the streets...
smell the desperation.
at least there's pretty lights...
although there's little variation.
it nulifies the night from overkill.
day after day it reappears.
night after night my heartbeat shows the fears.
ghosts appear and fade away...
come back another day.

"deep fried.... whatever!"

musings
(so, as you may know...
i've had little inspiration to blog lately. but,
Melissa reminded me about this and i decided that i'd
throw it up here. it's an experience i wanted to
share. now... on to the blog.)
in mid-2005, i was introduced to something that would forever change my life.
it is called a
Monte Cristo sandwich and i had it for lunch at the
Blue Bayou at Disneyland. HOLY CRAP!!! this was
amazing. cheese... good. ham and turkey... good. deep
fried goodness... AWESOME! my stomach was happy, my
heart was burning and my arteries were clogging. i
couldn't have been happier. however, this only led to
letdown for a few reasons.
1... i have to go to Disneyland and make reservations ahead of time to get lunch at the Blue Bayou. what if i wanted one on a whim? (i'm not exactly known for my patience.)
2... they don't serve Pepsi products at the Blue Bayou and, clearly, a Mountain Dew would only serve to complete this meal and enter it in to the top 10 eating experiences of my life.
the second one was simply and easily solved by sneaking cans of Mountain Dew in. (though the waiter did give me a strange look, it was totally worth it.) but the first... what to do???
then came the call. my friend, Jen had found the actual Disney recipe for Monte Cristos. i was elated. so, to make a long story short, i ran down to Target, bought a deep fryer (everyone should have one) and invited some friends over for a night of Monte Cristos.
i'd never fried anything before. it was awesome. friends... mountain dew... Korean television (don't ask)... and deep fried sandwiches. quite nearly a perfect night. however, after we were done eating our sandwiches... we still had a vat of boiling hot oil and grease... what to do?
now, the average person would say "that's pretty gross... let's turn it off and clean the thing up." but not us. no... we said "let's fry stuff!" so, we started frying things... a banana (it was too mushy though and sorta fell apart)... a marshmellow (kinda acted like the banana)... and a snickers bar (melted... but it was good). we were gonna fry some fudge that we had as well as some brownies, but i don't think they made it to the fryer (our mouths may have gotten in the way).
anyway, the moral of the whole story is... Monte Cristos are good... i can make them... and frying stuff is awesome.
ps... i still have that vat of oil sitting in the deep frier downstairs... come on over if you wanna give it a try!

"a disturbing lack of creativity... help!!!"

musings | my life
ummm... yeah. so, this
weekend, somebody (Melissa) commented that i hadn't
posted a good, creative or entertaining blog in a
long time. i hadn't realized how long it's been. i
don't know what's wrong with me, but i find that i
have had a disturbing lack of creativity lately.
so, please forgive me for posting stupid surveys or lame online test results. i want my creativty back! maybe i just haven't been inspired by anything lately. i don't know. anyway, if you have any suggestions, please feel free to pass them along. in the meantime... i'll just continue to not be entertaining in any way.
